Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is “Chop Suey” by System of a Down:
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the genocide of more than one million Armenians at the hands of the Turkish government. You can read poet and author Peter Balakian’s overview of the genocide, and why it matters, here. System of a Down has been involved in a worldwide effort that demands the current Turkish government acknowledge and take responsibility for the mass killing, and attempted extinction, of the Armenian people, and that Turkey name this act by its proper name, genocide. You can read a statement by System of a Down by clicking on the “Take Action” link on the band’s website.
