Song of the Week: “Alfie” by Dionne Warwick

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Alfie” by Dionne Warwick:

A couple of weeks ago I was looking after my friends’ cat, Alfalfa, for a few days while I was staying at their place before they returned from vacation.  I spent much of that time singing this Burt Bacharach and Hal David song, or part of it anyway, to the cat.  When my friends got back, one of them said, “Oh, I probably should’ve mentioned that Alfie’s deaf.” It explained some of his weird behavior, and also made me feel like an idiot: I’d been trying to impress this cat with a song and he couldn’t even hear me. This is a picture of the deaf cat in question:
