This week I discovered that the small and excellent Comedy Minus One record label has released something called New Moodio by Eleventh Dream Day, a band that swirled around my head during my teenage years and into my twenties. Their 1993 album, El Moodio, is a real gem, so naturally, I wondered: what is New Moodio? A rerecording? a rerelease with some new tracks or demos or whatever? Neither of those, it turns out, but something much, much better. Follow this link to find out what. After you’ve read that, take another listen to this excellent, excellent song and note once more the absurdity of the statement, “Women were not big that month.” Duh. Janet Bean’s vocal performance on this song is–and has been for more than twenty years–one of my favorite on record. The snarl, the edge of irony, the interplay of the duet on the choruses, the plain old rock ‘n’ rollness of it–I’ll put these vocals, and this song, up against anything, or I would, if rock ‘n’ roll were a competition, which it ain’t. But this song is a complete ass-kicker, and I do love it.
Song of the Week: “Makin’ Like a Rug” by Eleventh Dream Day
Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is “Makin’ Like a Rug” by Eleventh Dream Day:
