Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is “Miss Bowling Shoes (Tomjuno Remix)” by Nick Evans:
Nick Evans is an excellent London-based songwriter and musician whose album Abandon Ship, Prepare Your Things was released last summer. “Miss Bowling Shoes” is the opening track of that album, and here the spare guitars-and-percussion arrangement of the album track gets remixed into an electronic version that fills in the spaces with an emphasised beat, cycling, swirling patterns and voice sampling that hints at 10cc. The original version gets picked up, reshaped, stretched back into form, and what you get is both the same song, and something both subtly and unsubtly different. When two people with similarly passionate, but sonically different, approaches to music collaborate, interesting things happen. Don’t take my word for it; go buy Abandon Ship, Prepare Your Things and listen to these versions side-by-side. Listen to the rest of the album, too, and go and check out Tomjuno’s discography as well.
