Song of the Week: “The Marquee and the Moon” by Sloan

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is is “The Marquee and the Moon” by Sloan:

Today is Canada Day, so here’s a Canadian band, and my favo(u)rite Canadian band, most probably.  There’s a huge pile of Sloan songs to choose from, and they’re also a band that puts together great albums–albums that aren’t just a collection of songs thrown together, but rather, have real shape to them.  Among the things I love about this particular song is the layers of simple parts that add to something dramatic and more complex. I also love that big drum break towards the end.  I also love the melancholy-mixed-with-quiet-defiance-and-hope of the lyrics, and the fact that I can’t listen to it without pressing Television into my hearing and thinking of it, too.
