Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is “Country Sleaze” by Goat Girl:
I went to see Parquet Courts this week, and on the advice of my buddy Bob’s son Alex, we got there early to check out South London’s Goat Girl. It was a good shout. The thing about Goat Girl is, they’re not a fully-formed rock ‘n’ roll unit just yet, but listening to and watching them, you can tell that they’re on their way. They’ve got a great surf-punk-‘n’-roll-on-quaaludes, wet-Fenders-and-big-drum-pounding sound, and their songs had a bunch of good ideas and riffs in them, though not always quite enough shape. I feel like I’m damning them with faint praise here, but I don’t really mean to; this is a young band, still working on its ideas, and it’s a fun thing to see–they’re pretty good, and they’ll only get better. Also, it couldn’t have been easy playing a venue that big with the usual quarter-full smattering of a crowd. I’d like to see them again in a smaller and fuller place, where some of their own energy is reciprocated.
