Song of the Week: “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” by Lightnin’ Hopkins

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This week it’s “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” by Lightnin’ Hopkins:

The more I listen to this song–and I listen to it quite a lot, because it’s on a superb blues compilation that a friend made for me a couple years ago–the more filthy, creepy and wrong I think it is.  I mean, Lightnin’, um, Mister Hopkins, you ain’t a schoolboy, too!  Stop bothering that little girl! And no, she shouldn’t tell her mama and her papa that you’re a– I mean, this is… Yeah, there’s a lot of things they don’t know.

It’s the way he sings it and plays it, too.  Louche as hell, playful.  You can’t not like it.  You’re sort of implicated in this infatuation, getting all tickled pink with Lightnin’, wanting to buy her dinner and tote her damn books to school.

Filthy, creepy, so very wrong, so very right.
