Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This week, “Charlie Darwin” by The Low Anthem:
I bought the 7″ single of this last week, mainly because I wanted its B-side, a song called “Sally Where’d You Get Your Liquor From”, which I liked a whole lot when I heard them perform it live a couple years ago. There’s something about the combination of lyrics and melody and quality of voice (and yeah, okay, everything else; it’s music!) on that line, “Who could heed the words of Charlie Darwin” that hits the near-to-perfect button in me. This song is very simple, very elegant and beautiful, and lyrically very sharp (and not so simple, actually).
