Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is “Two Snakes” by Fucked Up:
Fucked Up played the Electric Ballroom in London last night, and the band finished its set with this song. The album version shows what an exciting band they are–three guitars, bass and a firecracker drummer, plus a vocalist who can holler with the best of them. But really, Fucked Up is a band you have to see live, because not only do they crank this stuff out LOUDLY, but they also create a real audience participation dynamic: frontman Pink Eye/Father Damian spends most of the show meandering the crowd, climbing on things, wandering out of the crowd (when I saw them about five years ago, he went out onto the road, half the crowd in tow like rats following the Pied Piper out of Hamlin), all while the band plays its complicated music with furious abandon.
