Song of the Week: “Larry” by Buffalo Tom

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

Here’s Buffalo Tom playing “Larry”:

“Larry” — Buffalo Tom

If you’d asked me between 1992 and 1995 what was my favorite band I might’ve said Buffalo Tom. The thing I liked–and like–most of all about Buffalo Tom is the heart-on-sleeve lyrics and the straightforward but perfectly executed song structures. One time when I saw them at the Metro in Chicago the WXRT deejay (Frank E. Lee maybe, probably?) who introduced them said there wasn’t a band more honest or real than Buffalo Tom (this is as close to a direct quotation as my shoddy memory will allow) and I think that’s all the description one really needs.  Leaning on the stage at the Metro or the Vic and singing along while these three musicians cranked out an hour of rock seemed the best possible thing in the world when I was a teenager, and the lingering memory of those shows suggests that it really was the best possible thing.
