Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
Here’s “I Will” by Sebadoh:
Of all your favorite bands from the 1990s that have resurfaced recently, the return of Sebadoh is both one of the more unexpected and one of the most welcome. “I Will” is the first track from the band’s new album, Defend Yourself, which is out in September on Joyful Noise Recordings in the USA, and Domino Records in the UK. Sebadoh is a terrific band because they have a sense of melody equal to their sense of noise, and they deploy these senses through guitar, drum and bass, and that’s it. They don’t particularly sound like Minutemen, but they share that same type of we jam econo work ethic, and they do strike me as aesthetic inheritors of all those totally correct things that Minutemen brought into the world.
