Song of the Week: “Drinkin’ Thing” by Gary Stewart

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Drinkin’ Thing” by Gary Stewart:

Gary Stewart — “Drinkin’ Thing”

I was introduced to this song last summer when Hiss Golden Messenger played it towards the end of an excellent set at Café OTO in London. If I remember correctly, MC Taylor said Gary Stewart was sometimes called the Honky Tonk Vampire. It’s also possible I misremember.  In any case, he was for sure known as the King of Honky Tonk, and if you like “Drinkin’ Thing” then you probably should check out “She’s Acting Single (I’m Drinking Double),” his biggest and best-known hit.
