Song of the Week: “moDernisT” by Ryan Maguire

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “moDernisT” by Ryan Maguire:

Neil Young in particular has been moaning (and, on the song “Driftin’ Back” from Psychedelic Pill, singing) about the crappy sound quality of the mp3 format for years now. But while Ben Maguire might’ve heard Neil Young rockin’ out his anger / rockin’ out his thoughts about it, he decided that one man’s/musical format’s loss is another man’s artistic opportunity.  Thus we have “moDernisT”, a song comprised of all the sound information that gets lost when Susanne Vega’s song “Tom’s Diner” gets compressed into an mp3.  You can read a little more about the track, and the project of which it’s a part, by visiting the Ghost in the MP3 website.
