{"id":1114,"date":"2015-09-04T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2015-09-04T08:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=1114"},"modified":"2015-09-02T11:37:32","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T10:37:32","slug":"song-of-the-week-outsider-blues-by-wooden-wand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=1114","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Outsider Blues&#8221; by Wooden Wand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>This is &#8220;Outsider Blues&#8221; by Wooden Wand:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6d4JeMK7o4Q\" width=\"455\" height=\"256\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Outsider Blues&#8221; is from Wooden Wand&#8217;s excellent 2012 album, <em>Blood Oaths of the New Blues. <\/em>It&#8217;s a really good example of a difficult genre or mode: the storytelling song.\u00a0 Bob Dylan is probably the master of this form (genre? mode?), or Woody Guthrie before him, and of course the blues songwriters and performers like Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Leadbelly, or Lightnin&#8217; Hopkins, to name only a few.\u00a0 The key here is a musical arrangement that both gives a foundation for, and yields ground to, the lyrics.\u00a0 That your story and lyrics have to be good enough goes without saying.\u00a0 Often when I listen to this song, I think it&#8217;s the percussion that&#8217;s the real triumph: a simple and effective pattern that mimics the passing rhythms of the road and underpins the song just the right amount.
