{"id":1129,"date":"2015-10-09T08:23:55","date_gmt":"2015-10-09T07:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=1129"},"modified":"2015-10-08T08:34:48","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T07:34:48","slug":"song-of-the-week-polaroid-by-richmond-fontaine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=1129","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Polaroid&#8221; by Richmond Fontaine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>This is &#8220;Polaroid&#8221; by Richmond Fontaine:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9fSyaG-xvwI\" width=\"343\" height=\"343\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Richmond Fontaine has a new album coming in the nearish future, and for whatever reason, &#8220;Polaroid&#8221; has been getting regular spins by the DJ that controls what my brain plays for me when I&#8217;m walking around\/trying to read\/trying to sleep, so here you go.\u00a0 Willy Vlautin is a great&#8211;and I mean great&#8211;songwriter, both within his musical idiom (or really, idioms, which range from these kinds of slow country numbers to harder rock along the lines of what people like to call alt-country, a tag that doesn&#8217;t really do anybody any favors, with some stops in between) and, in particular, as a lyricist.\u00a0 Willy is also a novelist, and to my mind, anyway, one of the most genuinely vital and interesting American novelists going right now.\u00a0 A lot of Richmond Fontaine&#8217;s lyrics are essentially stories&#8211;so I guess you could call the songs ballads&#8211;and what I really like about this one is the way it combines a storyline with a more traditional lyrical (ie, not narrative) chorus.\u00a0 &#8220;Polaroid&#8221; is from the 2004 album <em>Post to Wire<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px; padding-top:10px;\" class=\"hupso-share-buttons\"><!-- Hupso Share Buttons - https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/ --><a class=\"hupso_toolbar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/buttons\/share-medium.png\" style=\"border:0px; padding-top: 5px; float:left;\" alt=\"Share Button\"\/><\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\">var hupso_services_t=new Array(\"Twitter\",\"Facebook\",\"Google Plus\",\"Pinterest\",\"Linkedin\",\"Tumblr\",\"StumbleUpon\",\"Digg\",\"Reddit\",\"Bebo\",\"Delicious\");var hupso_background_t=\"#EAF4FF\";var hupso_border_t=\"#66CCFF\";var hupso_toolbar_size_t=\"medium\";var hupso_image_folder_url = \"\";var hupso_twitter_via=\"DouglasCowie\";var hupso_url_t=\"\";var hupso_title_t=\"Song%20of%20the%20Week%3A%20%22Polaroid%22%20by%20Richmond%20Fontaine\";<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/js\/share_toolbar.js\"><\/script><!-- Hupso Share Buttons --><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
