{"id":1437,"date":"2016-12-16T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T09:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=1437"},"modified":"2016-12-15T09:53:46","modified_gmt":"2016-12-15T09:53:46","slug":"song-of-the-week-foul-owl-on-the-prowl-by-boomer-and-travis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=1437","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Foul Owl on the Prowl&#8221; by Boomer and Travis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>This is &#8220;Foul Owl on the Prowl&#8221; by Boomer and Travis:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7HqIEtAhE7I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I watched <em>In the Heat of the Night<\/em> this week for the first time. I&#8217;m not sure why I&#8217;d never seen it before. It&#8217;s an incredible film with excellent script, performances, direction, and soundtrack by Quincy Jones, who wrote the music to &#8220;Foul Owl on the Prowl,&#8221; with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman.\u00a0 The song is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qAzAzG5Q1g0\" target=\"_blank\">played on the jukebox in the diner during a key scene<\/a>, and it&#8217;s a great example of how music can create drama.\u00a0 Although it&#8217;s music composed specifically for the film, it&#8217;s essentially used as a prop: the guy puts the record on the jukebox, and the menace and tension start up.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a lot going on in this scene that only reveals itself in the climax of the film, though there&#8217;s also plenty of knowledge the viewer already has that provides tension, too; basically, this is the key scene of the whole film, where everything that&#8217;s at stake is in play, and it&#8217;s soundtracked by a particularly wonderful piece of music.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px; padding-top:10px;\" class=\"hupso-share-buttons\"><!-- Hupso Share Buttons - https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/ --><a class=\"hupso_toolbar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/buttons\/share-medium.png\" style=\"border:0px; padding-top: 5px; float:left;\" alt=\"Share Button\"\/><\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\">var hupso_services_t=new Array(\"Twitter\",\"Facebook\",\"Google Plus\",\"Pinterest\",\"Linkedin\",\"Tumblr\",\"StumbleUpon\",\"Digg\",\"Reddit\",\"Bebo\",\"Delicious\");var hupso_background_t=\"#EAF4FF\";var hupso_border_t=\"#66CCFF\";var hupso_toolbar_size_t=\"medium\";var hupso_image_folder_url = \"\";var hupso_twitter_via=\"DouglasCowie\";var hupso_url_t=\"\";var hupso_title_t=\"Song%20of%20the%20Week%3A%20%22Foul%20Owl%20on%20the%20Prowl%22%20by%20Boomer%20and%20Travis\";<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/js\/share_toolbar.js\"><\/script><!-- Hupso Share Buttons --><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
