{"id":1604,"date":"2017-12-15T09:09:45","date_gmt":"2017-12-15T09:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=1604"},"modified":"2017-12-15T10:54:12","modified_gmt":"2017-12-15T10:54:12","slug":"song-of-the-week-woody-guthrie-by-alabama-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=1604","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Woody Guthrie&#8221; by Alabama 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>This is &#8220;Woody Guthrie&#8221; by Alabama 3:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xz4D5JlHoQQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Basically, as a means of marking the election of Doug Jones to the United States Senate this week, or if you&#8217;d rather look at it another way, as a means of marking the defeat of Roy Moore in the Alabama election for the United States Senate this week, or if you&#8217;d rather look at it a different way, as a means of marking an election result that stands as a defeat of pedophilia, racism and homophobia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2017\/12\/how_did_doug_jones_win_women_a.html#incart_maj-story-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by black women, black men, and young people<\/a>, I thought I&#8217;d post a song by the London electro-country-whatever group Alabama 3, who really don&#8217;t have anything to do with Alabama, and I decided on this one.\u00a0 I&#8217;d planned to choose an Aretha Franklin song, probably &#8220;Respect&#8221;, and talk about race and music and Muscle Shoals, but it turns out <a href=\"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=1227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I&#8217;d posted &#8220;Respect&#8221; by Aretha Franklin<\/a> last year. The important thing here is Doug Jones won, Roy Moore lost, and there&#8217;s a glimmer of light in the American political landscape.
