{"id":1738,"date":"2018-10-19T09:00:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T08:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=1738"},"modified":"2018-10-18T10:33:17","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T09:33:17","slug":"song-of-the-week-starry-eyes-by-the-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=1738","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Starry Eyes&#8221; by The Records"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>This is &#8220;Starry Eyes&#8221; by The Records:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lAH1ioLiaHw\" width=\"351\" height=\"220\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Last weekend I stumbled onto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/remembering-john-wicks-a-uk-pop-genius-who-once-called-virginia-home\/2018\/10\/13\/9fa93652-cd80-11e8-a3e6-44daa3d35ede_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.a325d186d97c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this obituary for John Wicks<\/a>, the singer\/songwriter behind The Records, a band I&#8217;d never heard of, and for reasons that will be obvious if you read the article, that lead me to &#8220;Starry Eyes.&#8221; There&#8217;s a small but real thrill in hearing for the first time a perfect&#8211;let&#8217;s get that straight, perfect&#8211;piece of guitar pop from long enough ago that it&#8217;s hard to believe I&#8217;d never heard it before. It&#8217;s somehow old and faded and brand-spanking new all at once. Musically it bears a nodding resemblance to its contemporary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ndF1ZDuFBgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Do Anything You Want to Do&#8221; by Eddie and the Hot Rods<\/a>, though its tone moves towards pretty where Eddie&#8217;s song aims rough. Lyrically it falls into a category with which I have a minor obsession: the rock\/pop song about\u00a0rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll and\/or the rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll music business. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XMoop0rn780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;So You Want to Be a Rock &#8216;n&#8217; Roll Star&#8221; by the Byrds<\/a>, for example, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aiEWT1lxl6A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Late Greats&#8221; by Wilco<\/a> (not to mention several other Jeff Tweedy songs), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1VVj1zqbWpU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Range Life&#8221; by Pavement<\/a>, and on and on; it&#8217;s a varied subgenre, or whatever you want to call it. I feel a little giddy to have another song to add to my collection, to reshape my joy.
