{"id":395,"date":"2012-10-05T10:10:27","date_gmt":"2012-10-05T09:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=395"},"modified":"2012-10-03T17:47:19","modified_gmt":"2012-10-03T16:47:19","slug":"song-of-the-week-her-royal-fisticuffs-by-superchunk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=395","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Her Royal Fisticuffs&#8221; by Superchunk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>This week I present &#8220;Her Royal Fisticuffs&#8221; by Superchunk:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sR8IEpqe0lo\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This song is from <em>The Laughter Guns<\/em> EP, released in 1996.\u00a0 When I was a snot-nosed college rock DJ at <a title=\"WRCU 90.1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wrcufm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the premier radio broadcaster in Hamilton, N.Y.<\/a> (90.1 on your FM dial, Central New Yorkers, and on the internet everybody else!)\u00a0 I used to play this song to death.\u00a0 And yet: it never died.\u00a0 Fast, fun, melodic, loud: Superchunk&#8217;s songs all kind of sound the same, but it&#8217;s a hell of a song, and somehow they never get boring.\u00a0 I think the reason is that when you really pay attention, they don&#8217;t sound the same at all: there&#8217;s a lot going on between the two guitars, bass, drums and vocals that add up to more than the sum of those parts.\u00a0 Also, I think I just have a soft spot for bands that take a pretty standard set-up and invest it with equal parts brains and balls, or what, if this were 1932 (and let&#8217;s face it, the way the economy is going, it might as well be), I would no doubt call moxie.\u00a0 This song is one of their underrated best.\u00a0 What&#8217;s it mean?
