{"id":478,"date":"2013-01-25T09:51:50","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T09:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=478"},"modified":"2013-01-25T11:01:46","modified_gmt":"2013-01-25T11:01:46","slug":"song-of-the-week-ghost-on-the-canvas-by-glen-campbell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=478","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Ghost on the Canvas&#8221; by Glen Campbell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s &#8220;Ghost on the Canvas&#8221; by Glen Campbell:<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A7kw5zXVFVQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I watched a documentary about Glen Campbell on the BBC this week.\u00a0 The film itself was so-so: not all that well-written or narrated.\u00a0 On the other hand, there were some nice interviews with his brother and sister and nephew talking about the family he grew up in, and a really wonderful interview with Jimmy Webb talking about his working relationship with Campbell, and of course, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QTfwcLdP5Xkhttp:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wichita Lineman<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ghost on the Canvas&#8221; is the title track from Glen Campbell&#8217;s final album, released in 2011.\u00a0 Campbell has been diagnosed with Alzheimer&#8217;s, and he wanted to make a new album, and perform a farewell tour, while he still could.\u00a0 The album features a number of Campbell&#8217;s own compositions, as well as a cover of &#8220;Hold on Hope&#8221; by Guided by Voices.\u00a0 In addition, Teddy Thompson, Jakob Dylan and Paul Westerberg contributed songs for the album (and Roger Manning wrote instrumental interludes that appear between many of the songs).\u00a0 This song is one of Paul Westerberg&#8217;s, and I&#8217;m featuring it here not only because I like it a lot, but also because I like Paul Westerberg (and particularly the Replacements) a lot, too.\u00a0 <em>Ghost on the Canvas<\/em> is definitely an album worth buying; it not only provides a moving and fitting end to Glen Campbell&#8217;s long career, it&#8217;s also just a very beautiful album.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px; padding-top:10px;\" class=\"hupso-share-buttons\"><!-- Hupso Share Buttons - https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/ --><a class=\"hupso_toolbar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/buttons\/share-medium.png\" style=\"border:0px; padding-top: 5px; float:left;\" alt=\"Share Button\"\/><\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\">var hupso_services_t=new Array(\"Twitter\",\"Facebook\",\"Google Plus\",\"Pinterest\",\"Linkedin\",\"Tumblr\",\"StumbleUpon\",\"Digg\",\"Reddit\",\"Bebo\",\"Delicious\");var hupso_background_t=\"#EAF4FF\";var hupso_border_t=\"#66CCFF\";var hupso_toolbar_size_t=\"medium\";var hupso_image_folder_url = \"\";var hupso_twitter_via=\"DouglasCowie\";var hupso_url_t=\"\";var hupso_title_t=\"Song%20of%20the%20Week%3A%20%22Ghost%20on%20the%20Canvas%22%20by%20Glen%20Campbell\";<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/js\/share_toolbar.js\"><\/script><!-- Hupso Share Buttons --><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
