{"id":591,"date":"2013-06-28T09:24:28","date_gmt":"2013-06-28T08:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/douglascowie.com\/?p=591"},"modified":"2013-06-26T15:32:11","modified_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:32:11","slug":"song-of-the-week-divorce-song-by-liz-phair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.douglascowie.net\/?p=591","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Week: &#8220;Divorce Song&#8221; by Liz Phair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each Friday I pick a song\u2013new, old, borrowed, blue\u2013that\u2019s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s &#8220;Divorce Song&#8221; by Liz Phair:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ssql3nT4zVE\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Phair &#8212; &#8220;Divorce Song&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Liz Phair&#8217;s debut album, <em>Exile in Guyville,<\/em> was released twenty years ago this week.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a more or less interesting account of its making featuring contributions from Liz Phair, Brad Wood and others in <em>Spin.\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/articles\/liz-phair-exile-in-guyville-oral-history-best-1993\/?page=1\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read it<\/a>. Part of what makes <em>Exile in Guyville<\/em> so great is the spareness of the sound, which this song demonstrates well.\u00a0 Of course there&#8217;s also the songwriting, and particular the directness and sharpness of the lyrics: pretty much every song on the album is in one way or another a challenge, and &#8220;Divorce Song&#8221; presents a particularly poignant and fragile challenge (can a challenge be fragile?
