Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This week’s song is “Blue Country Mystic” by Hiss Golden Messenger. Here’s the video for it:
I like its gentle but complicated country sound, just a little bit Tom Pettyish, just a little bit Van Morrisony. I like the saxophones that come in around the three minute mark and play the song out. I like the hint of melancholy and the hint of hope playing off each other, musically and lyrically. “Such a wild dream for a child of mine/ You have grown so dark in the sun.”
I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of the full album, Poor Moon, in the mail. You can find out a bit more, get a free download of the song “Westering” and buy the album here.
