Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This week’s song is “Battle the Fortress” by the superb North Carolina band, North Elementary:
I reviewed the album from which this track comes, “Soft Couch Tremolo,” a couple days ago. You can see what I wrote about the song there. It’s just five minutes of pretty, but also pretty rockin’, guitar pop, in which drum, bass, guitar, voice and organ are arranged impeccably. I keep waking up in the morning with it in my head and it just thrums away in there all day.
North Elementary is one of a number of excellent bands on the Potluck Foundation label that I’ve reviewed lately. I have no idea what they put in the water in that state, but whatever it is, it works. If you’re reading in this in North Carolina, you should do yourself a favor and track down the places these guys play.
