Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is Neil Young’s take on “On Broadway”:
This is from Neil Young’s 1989 album Freedom. To my mind, Neil Young manages to capture the spirit of the Drifters original, while still completely making it a Neil Young song, with the slow, menacing, as-few-notes-as-possible rhythm section. Oh, and, um, a weird plea to “gimme that crack!” Is he talking about drugs, or just instructing the drummer? You decide.
Here’s the Drifters version, just for fun: “On Broadway” by the Drifters. I love the Drifters.
