Song of the Week: “Away/Towards” by Hookworms

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Away/Towards” by Hookworms:

One of the good things about going to a music festival is you get introduced to a few new bands you’ve never heard before, and more importantly (from one point of view, anyway), you get introduced to them live, which should (from one point of view, anyway) be where a band really shines–or falters.  At End of the Road last weekend, I went to see Hookworms because I liked the sound of them, and what they had to say about themselves, in the band profile in the festival program. Though I only saw part of their set, what I did see I liked a whole bunch, and I’ll definitely look forward to seeing them again. I’m not sure this recording does the ferocity of their live set justice, but it still gives you an idea that this is a band with a big, psychedelic sound. Also, if you can make a nearly nine-minute song seem short, your band is doing something right, for sure.
