Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is Arbouretum’s version of “The Highwayman”:
I’m a big fan of Baltimore’s Arbouretum, and this week I went to see them at the Borderline in London. They played “The Highwayman” as their encore. “The Highwayman,” if you don’t know, is a Jimmy Webb song. Jimmy Webb is probably most famous for writing “Wichita Lineman.” The most well-known version of “The Highwayman” is by The Highwaymen, a super group before we called them super groups: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Imagine being in a studio with those dudes. On The Highwaymen version, each singer takes a verse. Here we just get Dave Heumann’s wonderful baritone.
